My single biggest strength is sensitive and supportive accompaniment, particularly with vocalists. This skillset involves classical training, strong technique, and a unique ability to listen and breathe with the vocalist/soloist, combined with exceptional sightreading ability and artistic flexibility. In auditions and rehearsals as well as performance these fundamental musical skills lead to more effective presentation and a better show.
Playing in various bands over the years has expanded my musical versatility as well. Rock, Country, Blues, Prog Metal, Fusion, Covers, and orchestral Pops all require different musical strengths and approaches. The musical sensibilities I have gained from those experiences have allowed me to grow as an artist and be a better musician. This versatility is especially useful in theatrical work, where a season may contain a rock show, a classic Broadway show, a country show, a Gilbert and Sullivan piece, etc.
A friend and fellow pitrat once told me that he considered playing in a musical theatre pit the highest form of musicianship because it is not enough to merely be a good player; one must also be very well-versed in multiple styles, have a great work ethic and collegial attitude, and have a unique ability to support the show with solid playing and good ensemble work.
